Barnard Castle School

The HeadmasterI hope this website conveys something of the ethos and atmosphere of Barnard Castle School. Set in its own fifty acre estate in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the school provides a high quality boarding and day education to girls and boys who are encouraged to reach their maximum potential in a happy and purposeful environment.

Academic achievement lies at the heart of what we do. We expect high standards of discipline and intellectual focus in the classroom, and we track pupil progress against national benchmarks and our own responsive assessment arrangements. The house system ensures that pupils of different ability maintain contact and friendship, whilst stringent but sensitive setting in the core academic subjects provides competitive edge within the classroom. The desire to foster community whilst promoting individual talent reflects the school's Christian foundation which invites pupils to see themselves as vital components in a working whole driven by mutual respect and decency.

We believe that all our children have something to offer, and we are driven by a desire to find areas where each of them can excel. Every term we offer an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities, and we are as proud of those who play chess for their house as those who play rugby for their country. By the time they leave our pupils should be confident, well-rounded young people, academically and socially prepared for the challenge of university life and the modern world. Should you wish to find out more about the school we would be delighted to arrange a time when you and your child can come and see it in action.
