Year 1

Building on progress made in Reception, we adopt a creative, hands-on approach in Year 1 topics that allow children to develop their curiosity, to be inquisitive and ask questions and develop their learning.

The children consolidate their Jolly Phonics work and this then extends into Jolly Grammar work. We build on writing and comprehension skills and begin to introduce simple joins in handwriting. Our Mathematics programme covers numbers, shapes, measuring and data handling through practical, problem-solving tasks in a fun and explorative way.

The foundation subjects are taught through topic work and foster the children’s scientific, creative and thinking skills.  Music, PE, Swimming and French are taught by specialist teachers.

Throughout the year the children visit places in the local area linked with the topics they have studied in class.

"Throughout the school, pupils achieve well. At some ages achievement is excellent, particularly Years 1 and 2." Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2016
