Sixth Form Physics visit to Durham University – 13.12.2023

13 Dec 2023

By Max O, Year 12

The Sixth Form Physics group, accompanied by Mr. Butler and Mr. Dunn, went to this year’s Christmas lecture at the department of Physics at Durham University.

The interesting and enriching lecture by Prof. Ifan G. Hughes and Dr. Steven A. Wrathmall was all about decoding the spectrum of sunlight and therefore saving the civilization from solar storms. Both scientists presented their research  in an  understandable way for A Level students, including fascinating experiments to demonstrate their achievements. For example, how you can produce many different colours of light in your own kitchen just using corn sirup and polarising film.

After the talk, we were shown around the Physics department and got plenty of information about studying Physics at Durham university. Overall it was a very informative and interesting trip, expanding our understanding of Physics outside the classroom.
