Congratulations, Emily!

30 Jun 2020

We are always keen to highlight the achievements of Barnardians, more so during these unprecedented times.

Well done to Year 12 student Emily, who was accepted on a highly competitive languages course.

Emily was awarded a place on The German Pupil Courses, which are two-week courses in Germany for UK pupils studying German. They offer young people the opportunity to experience the country, its culture, language and lifestyle first-hand.

Thomas, another of our Year 12 pupils, also made it far in the selection process as he was awarded a reserve place – another excellent achievement.

Sadly, due to the current global pandemic, the Germany experience was cancelled, but Emily is still taking part in some elements of the course, albeit remotely.

Speaking about the course, Emily said: “The application process, for me, was quite challenging and it took just over a week to prepare and to construct an application that I was happy with before submitting.

“I was introduced to this course by my German teachers and it looked like an amazing opportunity to travel to Germany and to progress my language learning with other like-minded individuals. As the COVID-19 outbreak cancelled the trip, the course has been offering the opportunity to converse with a pen-pal and other individuals that are on the course as well as webinars every so often.”

She added: “I was elated when I heard that I been accepted on this wonderful course, while the news was bitter-sweet, I will still take away experience in application writing and language skills.”

Mrs Kent, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Barney, said: “We are incredibly proud of Emily, who is a hardworking student and fully deserved a place on what is always a highly competitive course. Thomas did extremely well too, as it is an achievement in itself to be within consideration of a place.

“While it is a shame that Emily cannot travel to Germany and experience the course in its entirety, at least she will receive some valuable languages experience and tutelage from The German Pupil Courses virtual and remote offering.”
