On Monday 9th February, Barnard Castle School proudly celebrated the official opening of its new CCF (RAF Section) Simulator Room. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance synthetic training and provide cadets with a modern, immersive learning environment.
The event, held on campus this week, marks an important milestone for the Barnard Castle RAF Section. The RAF simulator offers cadets access to cutting‑edge technology that will help develop key skills, broaden their experience, and further strengthen training opportunities within the Combined Cadet Force.
The project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Combined Cadet Force Association, funded through the Contingent Growth Fund. This investment reflects a continued commitment to expanding opportunities for young people at Barney and strengthening the long‑term development of the CCF contingent.
Contingent Commander staff and volunteers were also recognised for their significant contribution to the project. Particular thanks were extended to:
- Lt Col Caroline Connor, whose work was instrumental in securing the grant
- WO Harbottle, who vacated his office to allow the new space to be created
- The dedicated volunteers and Art Service team led by Mrs Rothwell, who spent many hours designing and painting the room
- The IT technicians who ensured the simulator systems were fully integrated and operational
The school was honoured to welcome Wing Commander John Sheedy as guest of honour to formally open the facility. Wing Commander Sheedy began his RAFAC journey as a cadet at 1114 Gosforth Squadron before going on to command at squadron, wing, and regional levels.
Promoted to Wing Commander in 2025, he now serves as the CCF (RAF) Liaison Officer for North Region, advising on CCF matters and supporting cadet training across the area. His attendance highlighted the significance of the project and the RAF’s ongoing commitment to youth development.
Speaking at the opening, staff emphasised the importance of this new addition to the school’s CCF provision and expressed gratitude to all who supported the project from concept to completion. The facility represents a major step forward for Barney RAF and will provide generations of cadets with access to enriched, high‑quality training.
The school extends its thanks to all members of the community who attended the opening ceremony and for their continued support of Barnard Castle School’s CCF programme.
