Barnard Castle School’s Chapel Choir recently enjoyed a memorable visit to Ripon Cathedral, where they performed Choral Evensong in one of the country’s most historic and inspiring sacred spaces.
The occasion offered pupils the opportunity to take part in a long-standing Anglican tradition, contributing their voices to a form of worship that has shaped British choral music for centuries. Performing in such a setting brought both a sense of occasion and a deep connection to musical heritage.
The service opened with the Preces and Responses by Richard Aylward. The choir then performed a newly composed setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, written especially for the service by the School’s Director of Music, George Ford. This original work provided a unique and meaningful centrepiece to the liturgy.
To close the service, the choir performed the motet If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis. Its flowing lines and serene polyphony created a thoughtful and contemplative ending, allowing both singers and congregation to reflect on the experience.
Throughout the evening, pupils demonstrated musical skill and maturity. They rose to the demands of the setting with real confidence, performing with clarity and expression in a space known for both its acoustic and historical significance.
The visit to Ripon Cathedral marked a proud moment for the Chapel Choir and a valuable opportunity to perform beyond the school environment. Experiences like this not only develop musical ability but also deepen pupils’ appreciation of tradition and performance at a high level. Well done to all involved.
