Working at Barney (as everyone who knows us calls Barnard Castle School) is so much more than a job. It’s being welcomed into a family of colleagues and a school community that is vibrant, energetic and highly rewarding.

Barney builds character, curiosity and ambition, and seeks staff who live these values and inspire pupils every day.
Join the Barney community
Barnard Castle School is a place where young people are encouraged to become confident, curious, kind and grounded. That transformation begins with the people who teach, guide and support them every day. We are proud to be a school that is ambitious for its students and for itself.
Through creating an inspirational, compassionate and down-to-earth environment, we help pupils grow into young adults with character. Our staff believe that education is about more than knowledge; it is about values, relationships and the willingness to keep learning. We want our pupils to be resilient, intellectually curious, open-minded and driven, with the humility to listen and the courage to lead in an ever-changing world.
Everything we do is shaped by three simple but powerful ideas: Community, Character and Ambition. These values guide our culture, our expectations and our shared purpose. Our school motto, Parvis imbutus tentabis grandia tutus – When you are steeped in little things, you shall attempt great things safely – reminds us that growth comes through daily effort, quiet encouragement and the willingness to try. As a member of staff at Barney, you play a pivotal role in making those moments matter.
We are looking for colleagues who believe in the purpose of education and who are ready to contribute fully to the life of the School. We want people who are proactive, reflective and committed to modelling the values we instil in our pupils, from the early years in Prep School through to the end of Sixth Form. If this sounds like you, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Below you will find a list of our current vacancies. We look forward to receiving your application.
