Barnard Castle School was founded in 1883 with a mission deeply rooted in philanthropy, access to education, and social uplift; these principles continue to define its purpose today.

Philanthropy at Barney is rooted in belief – in young people, in opportunity, and in the life-changing impact of education.

Founding Principles & Giving

The School’s founding was made possible through a remarkable coalition of civic-minded reformers, clergymen, and local philanthropists. Chief among them was Benjamin Flounders, a Quaker industrialist whose generous legacy supported educational opportunity for the youth of the North East. His vision was joined with the charitable endowment of St John’s Hospital (established by John de Balliol in 1229), which had historically existed to serve the poor and vulnerable in the Barnard Castle area.

These combined forces of Victorian civic reform, Christian social duty, and industrial philanthropy culminated in the founding of the North Eastern County School, with a clear objective: to provide a rigorous, values-based education for boys of all backgrounds. Queen Victoria formally approved the scheme in 1882, and the School opened its doors in 1883. Renamed Barnard Castle School in 1924, it has since evolved into a co-educational institution for ages 4–18, yet the founding ethos of enabling young people to “attempt great things” through strong character, community spirit, and ambition remains unchanged to this day.

Modern-day giving

Today, that philanthropic tradition lives on in the School’s fundraising priorities, which include bursaries, capital improvements, and transformational opportunities. These initiatives echo the founding principles by focusing not only on academic achievement but on life-changing access, particularly for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. The School’s transformational bursary programme exemplifies its ongoing commitment to social mobility, allowing children with potential but without means to benefit from a Barney education.

Modern-day giving at Barnard Castle School is both a tribute to its past and an investment in its future. Old Barnardians and Barnardian Supporters help sustain a culture of generosity that dates back over 140 years. Whether funding bursaries, supporting new facilities, or volunteering their time, donors are part of a living legacy that began with Flounders and Balliol and continues through every act of giving, large or small.

Philanthropy at Barney is not just about bricks or endowments; it’s about belief in young people, in opportunity, and in the enduring power of education to transform lives.

Our charitable programme

We believe in developing young people of strong character – students who are compassionate, outward-looking, and committed to making a positive difference. Our charitable programme reflects our sense of community ambition, encouraging pupils to serve others locally, nationally, and globally.

Throughout the year, students are offered a wide range of opportunities to engage in fundraising, service, and community action, helping them to grow into thoughtful and responsible global citizens.

Fundraising and whole-school charity events

We have a proud history of supporting a wide variety of charities and causes through both student-led initiatives and whole-school events. In recent years, our community has raised funds for organisations such as Young Minds, Macmillan Cancer Support, Water Aid, Brain Tumour Research and OddBalls, reflecting causes that resonate strongly with our pupils and staff.

Across the school – particularly in the Prep School students also take part in national fundraising events such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day, helping to build empathy, awareness, and a culture of generosity from an early age. Prep School have also supported charities such as Epilepsy in Action, and hosted fundraising events such as tea parties that encourage teamwork, community and compassion.

A highlight of the Michaelmas term is the whole-school Barney Bash – a high-energy run where the school’s Houses go head-to-head to see who can raise the most money. Taking place ahead of the famous Barney Run, the Barney Bash combines healthy competition, teamwork, and charitable ambition, with students encouraged to support their House and chosen causes.

We also proudly host an annual Macmillan Coffee Morning, bringing together students, staff, and families in a warm, communal setting to raise both funds and awareness.

In addition, charity fayres and fundraising days – often supported by external organisations – see pupils organising and running activities such as apple bobbing, netball shooting challenges, and creative stalls. Students frequently go above and beyond, taking on personal challenges and initiatives, including shaving their hair, to support causes they feel passionate about.

Service in the community

A cornerstone of our charitable work is our dedicated Service time on Mondays, when students actively give back to the local community. These sessions allow pupils to contribute meaningfully while developing leadership, responsibility, and social awareness.

Service activities include:

  • Litter picking in the local area
  • Supporting residents in local care homes
  • Working with nearby primary schools
  • Volunteering at local food banks

Through service, pupils learn the value of time, commitment, and collective action.

The Kenya Project: A long-standing partnership

One of our most significant charitable relationships is The Kenya Project, a long-standing partnership between Barnard Castle School and the community of Kipsaina in Western Kenya.

This partnership spans over three decades and is rooted in a wider connection between the school family and conservation and community initiatives in the region. Over the years, the project has supported education, infrastructure, and community development, fostering lasting relationships and meaningful impact.

A new Kenya Project trip will take place this year, continuing this important work and reinforcing our commitment to global citizenship.
