This month, students in Years 9, 10, and 11 sat the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. This 60-minute, 25-question national competition pushes students to their limits.
It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency. While the paper uses a multiple-choice format, the difficulty increases significantly toward the end. Later questions even include negative marking to reward accuracy and penalise guesswork.
Our students performed exceptionally well in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge this year. They earned an impressive range of awards across all three year groups. Notably, five students secured the coveted Gold award.
In Year 9, Tate M, Monty B, and Barnaby T all achieved Gold. Barnaby T deserves special recognition for earning the ‘Best in School’ title. Meanwhile, Year 11 students Freddie H and Luca CC also secured Gold. Luca CC also claimed the ‘Best in Year’ certificate for his outstanding score.
Many other students demonstrated great problem-solving skills to earn Silver and Bronze certificates. Ian T led the way for Year 10, achieving both a Silver award and ‘Best in Year’.
Silver Awards:
- Year 9: Emelie B, Zak W
- Year 10: Ian T
- Year 11: Henry O, Zak P
Bronze Awards:
- Year 9: George B, Ayla R
- Year 10: Amelia Y, William B, Harry D, Charlotte R, Charlie S
- Year 11: Matilda O, Charlie C, Annabelle T, Jack T, Rocco C, Evelyn M, Charlotte O
High scores in the initial challenge open doors to prestigious follow-on rounds. Tate M and Monty B both qualified for the Grey Kangaroo round for Year 9. Similarly, Freddie H and Luca CC will compete in the Pink Kangaroo round for high-achieving older students.
In a truly remarkable feat, Barnaby T received an invitation to the Cayley Olympiad. This represents the first time in many years a Barney student has reached this level. We wish all five boys the very best of luck in these upcoming global competitions!
