We’re delighted to announce the launch of a new Summer Rugby Academy, a week‑long residential and day programme taking place from 19th – 25th July 2026.
Designed for boys and girls aged 11 – 16, the Academy draws on the school’s distinguished rugby heritage to provide young players with an inspiring blend of high‑quality training, character development, and personal growth.
It also marks an important step in the School’s new 4th Term Enterprise Strategy, becoming an addition to our growing holiday programme portfolio alongside the already well‑established Summer Activity Weeks.
The Academy has been shaped around a comprehensive and professional rugby development experience, mirroring the structure and energy of a pre‑season programme. Across the week, participants will take part in technical and tactical coaching sessions, position‑specific skill development, structured gameplay, fitness assessments, and video‑analysis‑led feedback, all delivered by an expert coaching team.
Off the pitch, players will benefit from engaging workshops in nutrition, sports psychology and game awareness, helping them to gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop as a well‑rounded athlete. The programme also includes an off-site visit, giving players the chance to see elite‑level rugby in action, and a special guest appearance at the school from a professional player.

The Academy will be led by Mr Martin Pepper, Second Master and Course Director, whose extensive experience in youth rugby performance underpins the course’s ambition and quality. He will be joined by Mr Lee Dickson, Master i/c Rugby and former England scrum-half, who brings a wealth of top‑flight experience to the coaching team.
Mr Will Chaloner, York Housemaster, will oversee the welfare provision, ensuring that both day pupils and residential participants enjoy a safe, supportive and welcoming environment throughout their time at Barney.
Reflecting on the launch, Mr Pepper said:
“Barney’s rugby tradition is something we are immensely proud of, and the Summer Rugby Academy allows us to share that passion with young players looking to challenge themselves, build confidence and enjoy an unforgettable week of rugby. Our aim is to provide a supportive and aspirational environment where every participant feels supported to grow both on and off the field.”
Mr Chaloner added:
“Creating a strong sense of community is central to the Academy. From the residential houses to the training pitch, we want every player to feel at home, to feel valued and to finish the week with new friendships, new skills and a real sense of achievement.”
The Academy is open to external participants, who will train alongside Barney pupils. This reflects the School’s commitment to widening access to its sporting and educational expertise.
Bookings are now open and can be made via the dedicated webpage.
