Pupils across Barnard Castle School came together to celebrate the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough through a special hand-drawn birthday card competition that encouraged creativity and a shared appreciation for the natural world.
Open to every year group from Reception through to Upper Sixth, the competition invited pupils to design unique birthday cards inspired by Sir David’s extraordinary life and dedication to wildlife and conservation. Entries arrived from all corners of the School, showcasing a huge variety of artistic styles and thoughtful ideas.
Teachers from the Biology, English, and Art departments judged the competition, carefully selecting standout entries from an impressive collection of submissions. Pupils used natural materials, bold colours, and detailed illustrations to bring their ideas to life, with many designs featuring animals and habitats closely associated with Sir David’s work.
The competition provided a wonderful opportunity for pupils of all ages to reflect on the impact Sir David Attenborough has had on generations around the world. His documentaries and environmental campaigning have inspired countless young people to take an interest in wildlife, conservation, and the importance of protecting the planet for future generations.
Throughout the School, pupils embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. From colourful early years drawings to more detailed artistic designs from older pupils, the standard of entries highlighted both the imagination and thoughtfulness of the Barney community.
