Our first Lectern Club of the year has allowed our Sixth Formers to kick off their extra-curricular calendar with confidence, giving them a great opportunity to practice their public speaking and communication skills.
The event was brilliantly hosted by our new committee, with nostalgic late-2000s-inspired decorations and glowsticks creating a vibrant atmosphere to enjoy an outstanding meal in, provided by our Catering Team.
This time around, the theme was music, with students using song titles from the year they were born to draft and present introspective speeches that engaged and entertained. The majority were doing so for the first time, and they impressively rose to the occasion with style.
The spirit of friendly rivalry reached its peak when the time for the dreaded impromptu speeches came about; a battle of quick wit and sharp thinking. It’s clear that there was no need for worry, though, as Sixth Former Sonny went head-to-head with Mr Fairwood and Mr Riley and came out on top!
Public speaking requires confidence at the best of times, but stepping up to the microphone for the first time is a test of true character. We must congratulate our Year 12 pupils for courageously taking the mic in front of their peers and teachers with poise and authenticity.
Despite the nerves that come with waiting your turn to take to the floor, our students face the challenges of Lectern Club head-on, making it a firm favourite in the Sith Form calendar.
Opportunities beyond the classroom
Lectern Club is just one of the enrichment experiences we have as part of the co-curricular life at Barney. Societies, sports, creative arts, CCF; there’s a whole host of ways for our pupils to explore new interests and make lasting memories outside of the classroom setting.
