At Barnard Castle School, learning is not confined to the classroom. Our trips and expeditions open up the world to our pupils, giving them the chance to explore new places, grow in confidence and enjoy unforgettable shared experiences.

Journeys that shape young minds

Expanding horizons, creating memories

Whether it is visiting ancient ruins, skiing down alpine slopes or representing the School overseas, these opportunities help our pupils develop independence, curiosity and resilience.

We take great care to ensure that our trips are both enriching and accessible. Many are local and low-cost, providing valuable experiences for all pupils. Others, such as international tours, are planned well in advance to allow time for preparation and fundraising. Our aim is always to offer exciting opportunities while being mindful of the practicalities for families.

Learning beyond borders

A global classroom

Our academic trips bring learning to life. Geography pupils have explored the landscapes of the Lake District, the North Yorkshire coast, Iceland and South America. The Classics department offers a biennial overseas trip for around 40 students, visiting sites such as Rome, Pompeii, Athens and Delphi. Open to those studying Latin and Ancient History, these journeys offer a powerful connection between the ancient and modern world.

Pride in performance and play

Sport with spirit

Sport at Barney creates remarkable opportunities. This summer, over 80 pupils are taking part in our biennial rugby, hockey and netball tour to South Africa. These tours combine competitive fixtures with cultural experiences that pupils will remember for years to come. Past sports tours have included destinations such as Australia, Samoa, New Zealand, Holland and Spain.

Closer to home, pupils regularly take part in regional and national competitions and training camps, as well as our highly popular Saturday fixtures. These experiences help build teamwork, determination and lasting friendships.

The sporting spirit continues beyond school, too. Our Old Barnardians remain part of the community, with a touring rugby team set to compete at the Dubai 7s this year. It is a brilliant reminder that the pride of representing Barney stays with you for life.

Thrill, challenge, discover

Adventure and enrichment

Beyond subject trips and sports tours, there are many ways for pupils to embrace adventure. Year 7 to 9 pupils can join our annual ski trip, led by Mr Fairwood, a fully qualified Alpine Ski Leader. There are also trips to the indoor ski centre in Leeds and a biennial watersports trip to Europe for Years 9 and 10.

Activities such as sailing, kayaking and rock climbing are also part of our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) training, which encourages pupils to challenge themselves and develop leadership skills.

Something for everyone

Every trip, whether near or far, is designed to add value. From one-day outings to week-long expeditions, each opportunity is a chance to learn in new ways and to create lasting memories. Our programme is inclusive and diverse, making it possible for every pupil to discover something new, grow in confidence and enjoy time with friends outside the classroom.

At Barney, we believe that real learning often begins when you step outside your comfort zone. Trips and expeditions are an important part of that journey.
