Music at Barney is a huge part of school life, and it’s for everyone. We’re here to help you find your rhythm, your voice and your confidence.

Let’s get creative

Your music journey starts here

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be surrounded by creativity and opportunities to make music with friends.

From our House Singing competitions to joining with the whole school for weekly ‘Congers’ sessions, there is a chance for everyone to come together through music. They’re moments that bring us all closer, and you’ll create memories that you’ll remember for years to come.

Find your ensemble

Play your way

Whether you’re new to an instrument or a seasoned player, we’ve got something for you. Our school is buzzing with a huge variety of ensembles, all open to you. Want to dive into the world of Jazz, Funk, and Soul? Our Junior Big Band is the perfect place to start. For those who are ready for a bigger challenge, you might get an invite to audition for the elite Jazz Collective, where you’ll play ambitious pieces and get a taste of performing at a professional level.

Beyond jazz, you can join the Chapel Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, and even a Rock & Pop Band. These groups are an amazing way to build your skills, collaborate and feel like you’re part of something bigger.

One-on-one support to help you shine

Ready to take your skills to the next level? Our visiting music teachers are here to support you. Many are professional performers who bring their industry experience right into your lessons. You can get one-on-one tuition in almost any instrument or take singing lessons.

They’ll help you prepare for ABRSM or MTB exams, or even get ready for a big performance. Don’t worry about missing the same lesson every week; our lessons rotate, so you’ll never fall behind in your other subjects.

Showcase your talent

Hit the stage

We love giving our students a platform to shine. You’ll have several opportunities to perform, from informal weekly lunchtime concerts to our spectacular bi-annual gala concert at a professional venue like The Glasshouse, Gateshead. Plus, if you love drama, our regular school productions give you the perfect chance to be a star on stage. These events help to build your confidence and grow as a musician.

Explore music academically

Taking music as a subject

Our academic music programme is designed to be just as hands-on and exciting as our co-curricular activities. In our Pre-Prep and Prep schools, you’ll develop key musical foundations, ensuring a smooth transition.

For GCSE and A-Level, you’ll get to perform and compose your own music, while exploring different musical styles – from classical symphonies to film music and popular hits. These courses are the perfect launchpad for anyone thinking about studying music at a university or conservatoire.

At Barney, music is a journey, and we’re here to make sure it’s the most exciting one you’ve ever been on. Let’s make some amazing music together!
