GCSE student wins prize in prestigious national art competition

A Barnard Castle School GCSE Art student has achieved national success after winning a £25 prize in an art competition run annually by Specialist Crafts.

Phoebe Moffitt impressed judges with her incredible use of oil pastels, securing recognition for work developed during her two-year GCSE Art course at Barney. Her success reflects both her individual talent and the school’s commitment to nurturing creativity through personalised teaching and high expectations.

Throughout the GCSE course, Phoebe refined her technical skills while developing her own artistic voice. Staff worked closely with her to set personal challenges, and encourage creative risk-taking. This approach allowed her to push boundaries and achieve a truly striking result with ‘Lady on Blue’.

Art students at Barnard Castle School regularly perform strongly in this national art competition. Many achieve first place, with judges consistently noting the technical ability and originality demonstrated across a wide range of media. These results reflect a culture that values craftsmanship and creative confidence.

Creativity plays a central role in the school’s wider educational philosophy. We encourage pupils to see creative thinking as a vital life skill, not limited to the art studio. Through art, students learn resilience and self-expression. These qualities support success across academic subjects and prepare pupils for future study and careers.

Phoebe’s achievement highlights the benefits of an environment where individuality is celebrated. Teachers coach students to take ownership of their learning and strive for excellence on their own terms. This balance of support and challenge helps pupils develop confidence in both their ideas and their abilities.
