On Thursday, 27th November, four of our talented A Level mathematicians travelled to Durham Sixth Form College. Ben, Seb, Joe, and Jacob represented the school at the prestigious UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge. The day blended academic enrichment with fast-paced competition against the region’s best mathematical minds.
The team first attended several insightful lectures from Durham University’s mathematics department. Dr. James Lillie captivated the audience with a session on the ‘Prediction Paradox’. This talk challenged students to think far beyond the standard A Level curriculum.
Next, several PhD researchers shared their cutting-edge work during a series of talks. The students explored complex topics including:
- Probability: The mathematics of chance and risk
- Topology: Properties of geometric shapes under continuous deformation
- Mathematical biology: Using equations to model living organisms

The main event began once the lectures concluded. The UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge requires rigorous teamwork and clear communication. Our team performed exceptionally well during the cross-number and shuttle rounds and maintained their composure under strict time constraints.
One teammate’s answer often provided the starting point for the next person’s problem. This level of coordination paid off. Ultimately, the Barney team secured a hard-fought top-10 finish among a large field of competing schools.
We are incredibly proud of Ben, Seb, Joe, and Jacob. They represented Barnard Castle School with great spirit and intellectual grit. Their success proves they can hold their own in the most demanding academic environments. Well done to the whole team for a brilliant result!
