Barnard Castle pupils enjoy superb week on the slopes in La Thuile

An Italian adventure packed with skiing, friendship-building, and cultural enrichment

Barnard Castle pupils enjoy superb week on the slopes in La Thuile

During February half term, 43 pupils from Barnard Castle School travelled to La Thuile, Italy, for a week of skiing, mountain adventure, and cultural experiences. Over five days on the slopes, pupils took part in daily lessons ranging from beginner sessions on nursery runs to advanced groups tackling challenging reds and blacks, all under the guidance of professional instructors from Interski.

The trip was hugely positive for pupils, providing opportunities to develop resilience, confidence, and teamwork in a completely different environment. For many, it was their first time skiing. Watching them progress throughout the week was a real highlight for staff and instructors alike.

The annual ski trip is a long-standing and much-loved Barney tradition, offering pupils the chance to enjoy outdoor sport, experience a new culture, and build friendships across year groups. Alongside skiing, evenings at the resort included ice skating, exploring the local town, and time to relax with friends after busy days on the mountain.

Reflecting on the week, trip leader Mr Fairwood commented:

The pupils were an absolute credit to Barney. Their behaviour, enthusiasm, and determination on the slopes were outstanding, and the progress made by all groups was incredible to watch.

Trips like these showcase the richness of life at Barney; active, ambitious, and full of opportunity. Whether through sport, adventure, music, or academic challenge, pupils are encouraged to push themselves, support each other, and enjoy new experiences beyond the classroom.
