The Evening and Weekend Activities Programme for Boarders at Barney aims to ensure that whether you are full or flexi Boarders, you are able to access a full and enriching programme of activities beyond the school day.

Barnard Castle School weekends at Barney games night

Over the course of the term, we aim to provide a balanced programme of activities that promotes fun and exercise after the rigours of the school day, while also ensuring that pupils have important downtime to relax with each other, contact home or pursue their own hobbies and interests. Trips are optional and pupils will sign up for these in advance with their Housemaster in House.

Weekend activities

In the Senior School, all students attend Saturday lessons until 12pm. For our junior Boarders, they enjoy a full two-day weekend so our aim is to give them plenty of opportunity for fun in their downtime.

Preppie Saturdays

For Preppie Boarders in Old Courts, a programme of Saturday activities in and around the local area is planned while their older housemates attend Saturday morning school and subsequent afternoon fixtures.

Saturday evenings for all

All Boarding Houses make use of the sports facilities listed above on-site for fun and games.

Activities also include:

  • Firepit and marshmallows
  • Movie and pizza nights
  • Games nights
  • Discos
Barnard Castle School weekend activities includes enjoying Go Ape, for example.

Sunday trips

Most Sundays, Boarding staff run trips to local attractions that pupils are able to sign up to. For those who prefer to stay on site, staff supervise access to the School’s facilities and pupils are able, with the correct permissions, to explore the local area.

On Sundays, when there is no trip, team-building activities take place on-site to promote friendship and understanding within our community. Boarders remaining on site for the week are expected to take part.

Examples of recent trips include:

  • High-wire fun at Go Ape
  • Hike to High Force in Teesdale
  • Theatre trips to Darlington Hippodrome
  • Aqua fun at North Yorkshire Water Park
  • Paddleboarding in North Yorkshire

Trinity term revision

Examination year groups (11 & 13) are expected to attend revision sessions in the Sixth Form Centre each Sunday between 11am and 1pm up until their examinations have finished. An optional session will also be available on Sunday evenings.
