Boarding at Barnard Castle School is more than just where pupils stay; it’s where they grow. With over 150 boarders and a choice of full, weekly or flexi options, Barney offers a nurturing and lively environment that supports both academic success and personal development.
Welcome to boarding life
A home from home, filled with opportunity
From age 7 to 18, pupils from across the UK and beyond join our vibrant boarding community. Many boarders live locally, choosing to ‘beat the bus’ and use their extra time for study and activities.
Our Boarding Houses, which include Old Courts, Longfield, York and Northumberland, each have their own character, but all share a strong sense of family.
Our experienced Housemasters, Matrons and tutors create homes where pupils are known, supported and encouraged to be their best. From games nights and firepit chats to mentoring moments, life in the boarding houses supports friendship, fun and belonging.

Life outside the classroom
Beyond the school day
Boarders at Barney are busy and fulfilled. After lessons and structured prep time, our evening and weekend activities programme offers something for everyone, from baking, swimming and football to formal dinners and movie nights.
Saturdays bring more chances to explore, whether that’s on-site games or weekend trips to Go Ape, the theatre or North Yorkshire Water Park. On Sundays, pupils can relax, revise, enjoy downtime with friends, or participate in team-building activities that strengthen our inclusive community.
With modern facilities, access to school amenities, and plenty of opportunities to discover new hobbies, boarding life at Barney is an experience pupils cherish.
