Apollo is Barnard Castle School’s bespoke digital platform, designed to help students take ownership of their academic and personal development. By combining goal-setting, reflection, and progress tracking, it empowers pupils to understand their journey, build self-awareness, and achieve their ambitions.

A new approach to development

Apollo was created to solve a familiar challenge: how to meaningfully track both academic progress and character development. At Barney, we believe these two areas are closely connected, yet traditional systems often fail to capture the full picture.

Apollo changes this. It allows students to actively shape and record their journey as it happens, rather than reflecting only in hindsight. Pupils set goals, log achievements, and reflect honestly on their experiences, including setbacks, developing resilience and self-awareness along the way.

This is not a static record. It is a living, evolving platform that grows with each student, helping them recognise their progress in real time.

Putting students in control

At the heart of Apollo is student ownership. From Prep School through to Sixth Form, pupils use the platform to set meaningful goals and track their progress over time.

Students typically set a small number of focused targets each term, spanning both academic and personal development. These might include improving exam performance, building confidence in public speaking, or developing leadership skills through co-curricular activities.

Regular reflections encourage students to think more deeply about their learning. By breaking larger ambitions into manageable steps, Apollo helps pupils stay motivated and focused. Over time, this process builds independence and a stronger sense of purpose.

Capturing the full school experience

Apollo goes beyond the classroom, capturing the breadth of school life. Through the ‘Experiences’ feature, students create a rich digital portfolio of their time at Barney.

This might include photos from a drama production, videos of a music performance, reflections on a sports fixture, or records of academic competitions. Each entry becomes part of a wider narrative, helping students see how their skills and interests develop over time.

A dedicated achievements section allows pupils to curate key milestones, effectively building a living CV. This proves invaluable when applying for roles, responsibilities, or university places, as students can draw on real examples to support their applications.

Digging deeper outside of lessons

Apollo is fully integrated with the School’s SharePoint platform, giving students direct access to a wide range of academic resources. This includes podcasts, reading materials, subject-specific content and extension activities designed to deepen understanding.

This connection allows pupils to go beyond what is covered in lessons. They can revisit topics, explore new perspectives and engage with subjects in greater depth, all within a structured and accessible environment.

By encouraging independent exploration, Apollo supports intellectual curiosity and helps students take greater ownership of their learning, developing habits that prepare them for university-style study.

Meaningful conversations and support

Apollo strengthens the relationship between students and staff. Built-in one-to-one meeting records allow tutors to track progress and provide tailored guidance.

These structured conversations form a key part of pastoral care. Tutors act as mentors, helping pupils reflect on their goals, celebrate successes, and address challenges. The platform ensures that discussions are documented and revisited, creating continuity and clarity.

Meetings can also involve careers advisors, Heads of Department, and other key staff, for a unified approach that supports every aspect of a student’s development.

Linking character with academic success

At Barney, we place equal value on academic achievement and character development. Apollo brings these elements together through its self-assessment tools.

Students evaluate their learning behaviours against clearly defined criteria linked to the School’s core values. This encourages honest reflection and helps pupils understand how their approach to learning impacts their outcomes.

Teachers can respond to these reflections, creating an ongoing dialogue that supports progress. This shared understanding helps students take responsibility for their learning while developing key skills such as resilience, organisation, and independence.
