Learn how our vibrant House System fosters community, character and friendly competition across the School.

Belonging starts here

At Barnard Castle School, our House system is at the heart of everything we do. It is more than a structure; it is a community, a source of pride, and a lifelong bond.

When a pupil joins Barney, they are welcomed into their House with a House tie or badge, marking the start of a journey that will shape their time at school and stay with them for life. In the Headmaster’s first address to new students, he says, “I don’t just want you to fit in here; I want you to belong.” And your House is the first place you belong.

Community in action

Each pupil is placed into one of our day or boarding houses, which becomes their home base for pastoral care, friendships, competition and community spirit. In the Prep School, there are four day Houses and one boarding House. In the Senior School, there are five day Houses and three boarding Houses. Find out more about our boarding experience.

Within each House, pupils are supported by a Housemaster or Housemistress (HSM) and a dedicated tutor. Tutors provide daily support, both academic and pastoral, and the HSM oversees the well-being of every pupil in the House. Pupils look out for one another too, with friendships formed across year groups and senior pupils often mentoring younger ones.

The House system is a key part of our pastoral care. It ensures that every pupil is known and supported, that no one falls through the gaps, and that belonging is more than just a word.

Competition, pride and the Nailing Up tradition

The House system is also a source of friendly rivalry and unforgettable moments. Throughout the year, Houses compete in a huge variety of events including sport, music, debating, drama and creative writing. Every effort counts, whether you are scoring a goal, singing in the House song, asking a question in House debating or earning a merit in class.

The culmination of all this effort is the much-loved Nailing Up Ceremony. At the end of each term, the winning boys’ and girls’ Houses are announced in a moment filled with pride and tradition. The House Captains take the nailing up hammer, knock three times, and nail the shield to the Dining Hall wall. It is a symbol of hard work, teamwork and House spirit. It is a feeling that stays with pupils long after they leave Barney.

A lifelong bond

Being in a House is not just for your school years; it becomes part of who you are. Many Old Barnardians speak of their Houses with affection and pride, maintaining friendships with the people who shared those formative years. It is one of the most powerful expressions of what makes Barney special: a place where you don’t just attend school, you belong.
