Rugby is at the heart of life at Barney, more than a sport, it’s a defining part of our culture. It instils resilience, teamwork, discipline and leadership and plays a key role in developing confident, well-rounded individuals.

Whether for fun or future caps, Barney rugby offers a pathway for every pupil.
Our rugby programme is both inclusive and ambitious, supporting players of all abilities while providing a pathway for those aiming to compete at the highest levels. With a proud tradition of producing international players and a strong record in national competitions, we offer a rugby environment where pupils are inspired to play, proud to represent, and eager to be involved.
Under the guidance of Director of Rugby Lee Dickson, a former England international with 18 caps and over 15 years in professional rugby, our programme offers unparalleled coaching expertise.
Our journey from Prep to Senior School
Our rugby programme is built to nurture talent from the earliest stages. In the Prep School, pupils are introduced to the fundamentals of the game in a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment. As they progress into the Senior School, they benefit from structured coaching, regular fixtures, and opportunities to represent the School at regional and national levels.
Whether you’re an aspiring international player or someone looking to enjoy rugby in a positive and encouraging setting, Barnard Castle School offers a programme that caters to all levels of ambition. Wherever pupils begin their Barney journey, they are supported in a way that suits their goals – whether that’s striving for excellence or enjoying touch rugby with friends. With a rich history, expert coaching, and a strong commitment to developing well-rounded individuals, our rugby programme provides the ideal environment to pursue your passion.
Our extensive facilities, including multiple rugby pitches and a fully equipped fitness suite, create the perfect setting for training and growth. Pupils also benefit from tailored support through our strength and conditioning provision, helping them build both performance and long-term well-being.
