Cricket is a longstanding and deeply valued part of the sporting culture at Barney. More than a summer game, it teaches discipline, resilience, leadership and strategic thinking, developing confident, well-rounded individuals on and off the field. Our cricket programme is both inclusive and aspirational, welcoming players of all abilities while supporting those with ambitions to reach county or national levels.
Led by Lee Clough, Master in Charge of Cricket, our programme provides expert coaching, structured development and regular competitive fixtures. From friendly matches to high-level county and national competitions, pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, improve their game, and enjoy being part of a team.
Our journey from Prep to Senior School
Cricket begins early at Barney, with Prep School pupils introduced to the game in a fun and supportive environment. As they move into the Senior School, players benefit from focused coaching, extensive match play and the opportunity to develop into leaders on the field. We support all pupils, whether they are aspiring top-order batters, fast bowlers, team captains or enthusiastic new players finding their love for the game.
Our pupils also take on scoring, umpiring and team leadership roles, helping them grow as players and individuals with responsibility and confidence. Our excellent cricketing facilities include well-maintained pitches, outdoor and indoor nets that support year-round development.
In recent years, Barney has received significant recognition for the strength of its cricket provision. We were named among the Top 100 cricket schools in the UK, and received the 40 Club Regional Award for Yorkshire and the North East. We were also recognised for our Outstanding Contribution to Girls’ Cricket at the regional level, highlighting our commitment to excellence and inclusion across all areas of the game.
