Our Senior School curriculum combines strong academic foundations with opportunities for exploration and choice. From Year 7 to GCSE, pupils develop knowledge, skills and independence through a broad curriculum, cultural programme, and personalised pathways that prepare them for future success.
YEARS 7 & 8
A strong start
The journey through Senior School begins with a broad and balanced curriculum that builds confidence, curiosity, and core academic skills. Pupils study a wide range of subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Languages and the creative arts, ensuring a strong foundation across all disciplines.
Alongside this, pupils take part in the Barney Diploma, an off-curriculum programme designed to develop key skills and perspectives. Through modules such as Journey of Discovery, Origins, Transformations, and Possible Futures, pupils explore big ideas and build independence beyond the classroom.
This is supported by our wider cultural curriculum, including Headspace, Headmaster’s Assembly, and Service Time, which help pupils develop self-awareness and a strong sense of community.

YEAR 9
Exploring interests and making choices
Year 9 marks an important step in each pupil’s academic journey. It is the first opportunity to begin shaping an individual pathway, as pupils start to consider their GCSE options.
While continuing to study a broad core of subjects, pupils explore areas of particular interest in greater depth. This helps them make informed and confident decisions about the subjects they will take forward into Years 10 and 11.
There are also opportunities to develop independent learning through projects such as a mini-EPQ (HPQ), encouraging research and presentation skills. Combined with the ongoing cultural curriculum, this year supports both academic growth and personal development at a crucial stage.

YEARS 10 & 11
Focus and achievement at GCSE
In Years 10 and 11, pupils begin their GCSE studies, typically choosing three optional subjects alongside core disciplines. This combination allows them to specialise while maintaining a strong academic foundation.
Our GCSE programme challenges and supports pupils in equal measure. Small class sizes and dedicated teaching ensure that each student receives personalised guidance, helping them achieve their full potential.
Opportunities for academic enrichment continue, including elements of project-based learning that build independence and critical thinking. The culture curriculum remains a constant, reinforcing wellbeing, leadership, and responsibility during these important examination years.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
The Barney Diploma
Running alongside the academic curriculum, the Barney Diploma provides a distinctive framework for developing the skills and attributes needed for life beyond school.
Through a series of themed modules, pupils engage with topics that encourage curiosity, reflection, and broader thinking. The programme supports the development of communication, resilience, and independence, complementing academic study at every stage.
While not a formal qualification, the Barney Diploma plays a vital role in shaping well-rounded individuals. It ensures pupils leave the Senior School not only with strong results, but with the confidence and character to succeed in the future.
