At Barnard Castle School, we believe in the power of service. Service Time is our way of giving back to the community, and a key part of how we help pupils grow into compassionate, outward-looking young people.

Barney pupils learn the value of service by giving time, sharing talents and making a real difference in their community each week.
Giving back, growing together
Every Monday afternoon, pupils in Years 10 and above step outside the classroom and into the world around them, dedicating the last three lessons of the day to community action and charitable work.
From visiting care homes in Barnard Castle to painting murals in local primary schools, our pupils learn that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Service Time is about spreading joy, offering support where it is needed most, and learning the value of empathy and responsibility through real experiences.
It is also a fantastic opportunity for leadership in action. Older pupils often take the lead in planning and running their activities, developing confidence and communication skills as they support others and serve the community.
Built into school life
Service is not just an afternoon activity. It is part of who we are as a school. In Prep School, children learn from an early age about kindness, generosity and the importance of helping others. They take part in Harvest Festival collections, non-uniform days, fundraising events and food bank donations. Activities are often led by the School Council, and pupils are encouraged to support causes that matter to them personally.
In the Senior School, this spirit continues. The Charity Committee, led by Sixth Formers, raises over £10,000 each year for local, national and global causes. Pupils also run individual fundraising projects and take on personal challenges in support of charities close to their hearts.
More than fundraising
While raising money is an important part of what we do, service at Barney goes far beyond financial donations. We believe that giving time, sharing talents and offering space is equally valuable. For example:
- All School Chapel offerings are donated directly to charity
- The Christmas Concert at the Bowes Museum, performed by our musicians and choir, raises funds for the Friends of Bowes Museum
- Our facilities are regularly used by community groups such as the Rotary Club and The Clique for fundraising events and lectures
We want our pupils to understand that service is a mindset, not just a moment. Through giving back, they not only support others, they also discover the satisfaction and meaning that comes from doing something bigger than themselves.
