Barney offers a variety of ensembles, from junior groups to elite ensembles like the Jazz Collective, allowing students to develop their skills and collaborate with others, with many groups led by professional musicians and providing regular performance opportunities.

At Barney, we believe that music is universal, a way of communicating with others that transcends language barriers. As such, when learning an instrument, one of the best ways a pupil can further develop is to participate in an ensemble and be a part of something bigger than themselves; taking the skills they focus on in their individual music lessons and using them to collaborate with others by making music together.

We run a variety of exciting school ensembles, ranging from junior groups that are ideal for younger pupils or those new to their instrument, to elite ensembles that challenge our most aspirational young musicians and provide performance opportunities both inside and outside of school. These ensembles feature in regular performances, alongside forming the backbone of major events like our bi-annual gala concert at the Glasshouse, Gateshead.

Our Junior Big Band is open to all Woodwind, Brass and String players, as well as providing an opportunity for those pupils studying Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano and Percussion. It is an excellent platform for young musicians to first participate in an ensemble, and will introduce them to the world of Jazz, Funk and Soul. The Junior Big Band rehearse on Monday lunchtimes in the Music School.

For our most ambitious performers, the Jazz Collective is one of our flagship ensembles. We rehearse on Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes, and participation is by invitation only. Pupils who show a high level of proficiency on Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Piano, Bass Guitar, Guitar or Percussion may be invited to audition. The Jazz Collective also provides a brilliant opportunity for vocalists who are looking to develop their confidence and may similarly be encouraged to audition as a guest singer.

Our Jazz ensembles are supported by our Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs), who bring with them a wealth of experience within the performing scene and many of whom are current performers at a professional level.

In addition to our outstanding Jazz programme, pupils can participate in a plethora of other ensembles, including Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and Rock & Pop Band, each led by staff with expertise and authenticity.
