Music is at the heart of co-curricular life at Barney

We believe that every child is a musician, and we are passionate about nurturing that talent in an inclusive and inspiring environment. Music brings our school community together, and we take great pride in the joy and creativity that comes from making music as one.

Whole-school music-making is a cherished part of life at Barney, bringing together pupils of all ages and abilities. From ambitious school productions and gala concerts to weekly chapel services and the ever-popular House Singing competition, every pupil has the chance to experience the power of collective music.

Pupils enjoy a wealth of opportunities to immerse themselves in music beyond the classroom. A range of ensembles is open to all — from Chapel Choir to Junior Big Band —allowing pupils to develop their musicianship while enjoying the camaraderie of group performance. Individual instrumental and vocal lessons are offered by a team of highly experienced visiting music teachers, enabling pupils to progress rapidly and confidently on their chosen instruments. In addition, regular school productions provide a dynamic platform for performers to showcase their talents on stage, often collaborating across year groups in professionally staged events.

For our most advanced and dedicated musicians, there are opportunities to join elite ensembles that perform at the highest level. These groups challenge and inspire pupils through an ambitious repertoire, specialist coaching, and high-profile performance opportunities both in school and beyond. Membership of these ensembles is by audition or invitation, and they serve as an excellent platform for those considering music at university, conservatoire, or as part of a professional career.

Events

We believe that our young musicians should have many opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, from weekly lunchtime concerts to the bi-annual Gala event. It is these performances that build pupils’ confidence and help them develop as musicians and enable them to go on to bigger and more high-profile performances.
