At Barnard Castle School, every pupil is encouraged to get involved, try something new, and pursue their interests with confidence.

Barney pupils grow in confidence and creativity through a vibrant culture of participation, with endless opportunities to explore, lead and discover what they love.
Curiosity, creativity and a culture of participation
Whether they’re in Year 7 or Year 13, our pupils thrive in a culture that values participation, curiosity and personal growth. With an outstanding variety of clubs, societies and activities on offer, pupils are inspired to step outside their comfort zone and discover what makes them tick.
Mind, Body and Soul: a unique foundation
For pupils in Years 7 and 8, our Mind, Body and Soul programme provides a rich and varied introduction to co-curricular life. Across three afternoons each week, pupils rotate through over 30 different activities across the year, nurturing new interests and developing new skills.
On Mondays, pupils take part in Body activities such as fitness, sport and movement-based sessions, often led by Sixth Form volunteers under the supervision of PE staff. These activities build teamwork, physical confidence and resilience.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, pupils explore either Mind or Soul activities. Mind might include chess, languages or debating, while Soul could mean pottery, philosophy, film or origami. Each rotation lasts five weeks, ensuring depth as well as breadth.
This structured programme not only sparks creativity and wellbeing, but it also gives Sixth Formers a chance to grow as mentors and leaders, working alongside younger pupils and staff to create an inclusive and inspiring environment.

A diverse and inclusive offer
Alongside the Mind, Body and Soul programme, pupils can also take part in a huge array of clubs, societies and creative ventures. From music ensembles and drama productions to STEM clubs, Dungeons and Dragons, choirs, and competitive debating, there is something for everyone – and many pupils discover that “something” they never knew they’d enjoy.
Inter-House Competitions are a vibrant part of school life too. Held weekly on Wednesdays, these events bring pupils together to compete in everything from singing and creative writing to cake decorating, Scrabble, Just Dance, and of course, a wide range of sports. These friendly competitions celebrate talent and togetherness in equal measure.
More than just hobbies
We believe that clubs and societies are more than optional extras – they are part of what it means to grow up well. They help pupils form friendships, develop passions, build confidence, and take pride in being part of something bigger than themselves. Whether it’s performing on stage, playing in an orchestra, leading a society, or simply giving something a go for the first time, our pupils learn that Community, Character and Ambition are not separate goals – they are built together, through shared experience and joyful participation.
