The school community came together for a thoughtful and moving assembly to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, led with great maturity and compassion by three members of our Sixth Form: Ellie G, Emily T and Maya A.
Each speaker reflected on the importance of the day, not only as a time to remember the atrocities of the Second World War, but also as an opportunity to acknowledge other genocides that have occurred throughout history. Their words reminded us that remembrance is not confined to a single moment or event; it is a continued commitment to learning, understanding, and standing against injustice wherever it appears.
The girls also spoke about Sir Nicholas Winton, whose extraordinary actions during the late 1930s saved the lives of hundreds of Jewish children. His courage, compassion and refusal to stay silent in the face of danger continue to inspire generations. His legacy is a powerful reminder that individual choices can shape countless futures.
At Barney, moments like this reinforce the strength of our community. They encourage our students not only to honour the past, but to recognise the signs of prejudice, discrimination and intolerance in the world around them. By learning together and reflecting together, we empower our young people to become thoughtful, responsible and courageous members of society.
Holocaust Remembrance Day challenges us all to ensure that history is not forgotten and that the values we uphold today help create a safer, kinder future for everyone.
