Our Open Days offer families the perfect opportunity to step into our vibrant, down-to-earth community and discover what truly sets our school apart.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by pupils, guided through our beautiful campus, and immersed in the values, energy and spirit that define the Barney way. Whether you’re exploring options for Prep School, Senior School or Sixth Form, we’re here to help you picture your child’s future with us.
What to expect
A glimpse into a full and fulfilling school life
Our open days are carefully designed to give parents a true feel for the opportunities available at Barnard Castle School. You’ll hear from the Headmaster or Prep School Headmistress, learn more about our values, and see our academic and co-curricular programmes in action.
Our pupils will lead you on a personalised tour of our facilities, visiting classrooms, exploring our extensive facilities, and introducing you to our dedicated staff who support every child’s journey.
You’ll also enjoy music and drama performances, subject presentations, and take part in student Q&As, offering a window into the creativity and academic structure that defines life at Barney.
Your visit ends with refreshments in the Dining Hall, where you are given a chance to meet senior staff, pastoral leaders and fellow parents in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

Make it personal
In addition to our scheduled open events, we offer personalised visits tailored to your family’s needs, including separate tours and the opportunity to meet the Headmaster, Prep School Headmistress or Head of Sixth Form.
These one-to-one visits allow you to explore the School at your own pace and ask questions specific to your child’s interests.
Day applicants typically spend around 90 minutes with us, while boarding applicants enjoy a longer visit that includes time with Houseparents and a tour of our Boarding Houses.
To help new families feel welcome and supported from the very beginning, we also host induction days and new parents’ receptions, ensuring everyone feels part of the Barney community from day one.
