Exercise Senior Strike
24 Apr 2025The 48-hour fieldcraft exercise Senior Strike was designed to test and refine the leadership and tactical skills of senior cadets operating as Platoon Sergeants and Section Commanders. Conducted within Catterick Training Area, the exercise required cadets to execute reconnaissance patrols, gathering critical intelligence on enemy positions while operating in a realistic combat environment.
Upon securing an abandoned farmhouse as their Forward Operating Base (FOB), cadets immediately established sentry positions and set up an operations room to coordinate intelligence reports from patrols. Colour Sergeants Tom E, Harry H, Sylvan T, and Ethan D formulated orders and planned infiltration routes across the demanding terrain, ensuring their sections could conduct effective reconnaissance.
During the exercise, both sections came under enemy contact. However, swift decision-making and calm under pressure enabled cadets to return effective fire, establish a base line, and execute pairs fire and manoeuvre tactics. With half the section laying down covering fire, the remaining elements outflanked and decisively engaged enemy forces, securing victory in each firefight.
The final phase saw cadets consolidate all gathered intelligence into a detailed ground model. Section Commanders issued formal orders, and after rehearsing their assault, the cadets deployed under the cover of darkness to execute a deliberate ambush. Led by Colour Sergeant Joe G, the ambush was conducted with precision—enemy forces were sighted within 20 minutes, and upon triggering illumination flares, the sections launched a well-coordinated attack. With the enemy neutralised, cadets withdrew swiftly and successfully to the FOB, having completed their mission.
All 17 cadets demonstrated discipline, resilience, and tactical proficiency throughout the weekend, significantly developing their leadership and fieldcraft skills. These capabilities will serve them well in future exercises and solidify their standing as four-star cadets.
