Lectern Club – ‘Life is an Open Book’

06 Mar 2025

Sixth Form students took to the podium for a thought-provoking evening at the latest Lectern Club, where the theme ‘Life is an Open Book’ inspired a range of captivating speeches.

Held on the eve of World Book Day, the gathering saw Year 12 and 13 students deliver engaging reflections on their favourite literature, with speeches covering everything from We’re Going on a Bear Hunt to The Catcher in the Rye and The Lord of the Rings. Against the backdrop of lively discussion and a warm atmosphere, attendees enjoyed not only the eloquence of the speakers but also an evening of good food and great company.

Marking a bittersweet moment, the evening was also the final Lectern Club for Mrs Beadnell (Deputy Head I/C Sixth Form) who will be leaving us at the end of Term. Her contributions to the school and her support of students were warmly acknowledged, making the night all the more poignant.

The event once again showcased the depth of talent within Barnard Castle School’s Sixth Form, highlighting the students’ ability to weave together literary insight and personal interpretation in a setting that was both entertaining and inspiring.
