Sport

Success in the Sixth Form is a balance between academic studies, time spent on other acuities and interests, and enjoying social time with friends. At Barney, it’s not all about work.

Our sports facilities support students to reach the highest levels, with many competing for the school, the county, region and even country. Sixth Formers play a significant role in School teams and sporting events, as well as inspiring younger pupils and supporting staff as sports leaders. Involvement in team sport provides many opportunities for our senior students to develop further their communication, team-building, decision-making and other life skills. Sport and games also provide a valuable break from academic studies and further social opportunities for Sixth Form students.

Sixth Form students have five periods of games per week, as well as daily opportunities to access our extensive programme of over 100 activities each week. We have a visiting strength and conditioning coach, sports therapist and professional trainers to provide first class tuition, in addition to our own high calibre and highly qualified PE and games staff.

Our 50-acres of grounds comprise multiple fields and grass pitches for rugby, football, cricket, rounders, cross country and athletics. Astro-turf pitches for hockey and netball, and all-weather tennis courts, ensure year-round outdoor activity.

Our indoor sports and leisure facilities include:

  • Sports hall
  • Squash courts
  • Heated indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness suite
  • Dance studio
  • Cricket pavilion
  • Indoor rifle range
  • Weights room

Our facilities are of such a high standard that the school has been selected to host English Cricket Board county junior matches and Gallagher Premiership rugby team Newcastle Falcons’ residential camps, as well as hosting many school fixtures.
