Curriculum

In the Sixth Form classes tend to be smaller, and lessons increasingly become like university seminars. Whilst maintaining a supportive structure of monitoring and guidance, we gradually devolve greater responsibility for learning to our students in order to equip them with the right skills to succeed at university and beyond. Examination courses are supported by fieldwork, theatre visits and study trips, and Tutors are on hand to advise on any aspect of academic and personal life.

AS and A Level (Lower and Upper Sixth)
Pupils study 4 AS subjects in their Lower Sixth, and take 3 of these forward to A2 in their Upper Sixth. Pupils studying A Levels at Barnard Castle School benefit from being taught in small seminar-type classes. The course options are: English, English Literature, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classics (Ancient History and sometimes AS Latin), Art, Design and Technology, Economics, Geography, History, Politics, French, German, Spanish, Music, Physical Education, Theatre Studies, Physics, Philosophy and Ethics. In the Sixth Form students are supported in their Higher Education application and attend lessons which may culminate in General Studies exams.
