Boys - York House
After looking at several schools for our son, Barnard Castle was the one school that stood out from the rest. The school has great family values. You are made to feel welcome at the school and as a parent you are kept informed on a regular basis with life at Barney.

Welcome to York House. My name is Andy Allman, as Housemaster, I live with my wife Sarah right next to the boys in the main school building. It is my role to ensure that the boys are well cared for, happy and busy, and that they make the most of their opportunities at the school. I have a team of tutors and matrons who help to make the house a caring and friendly place.
York House is one of the senior boy boarding houses for pupils in Years 7 to 13. Each boy has a modern study bedroom, sharing with one or two of his peers.
The importance of establishing good work habits and practices is constantly stressed in the house. Prep time is disciplined and well staffed and all boys study for an hour and a quarter, five nights per week. Sunday prep time is 45 minutes long.
Away from work we encourage a lively, friendly house where all are busy with school and house activities, trips out, or just playing with friends. The house ‘spirit’, engendered by living and working together closely is always evident in inter house competitions, and York House have a terrific record in the Barnard Run and Sports Day in particular.
Weekend and evening trips are always popular, and we encourage a wide range of places to visit in the local area. Last term we have been to Rock Antics (indoor climbing wall), go karting and ice skating. We run trips to Wet n’ Wild, cinemas and ten pin bowling as well as to major sporting events such as Durham County Cricket, Newcastle Falcons rugby matches or Premier League football matches. Twice a term at family weekends there is also always a trip for boarders on the Saturday to Leeds, York, the Metro Centre, Newcastle or Scarborough.
As boarders the boys have access to all the school facilities in the evenings and at weekends – the I.T rooms, sports hall, squash and tennis courts, all weather pitch, music school, swimming pool (supervised) and our magnificent and extensive playing fields and grounds. There is no reason ever to be bored!
