Music

With its labyrinth of teaching rooms and practice rooms, an army of peripatetic teachers specialising in anything from percussion to guitar, a fast track GCSE option in Year 9 and voluntary musical activities throughout the school, Barnard Castle School has an enviable reputation in the North East.

Its jazz band is in demand locally and internationally. The chapel choir performs weekly for Sunday services, produces its own CDs, and can turn out a cathedral evensong for Durham or York at incredibly short notice. There is a wealth of talent in the school and outlets for all from charitable 'Pop idol' to Speech day virtuosity and A level credits.

Music in the school is highly regarded and well supported by both staff and pupils.

Music In The Curriculum
Music is compulsory for all pupils up to and including Year 9 in line with National Curriculum policy. In the Senior School, pupils receive two 40 minute periods of class teaching every week. The syllabus is constructed around the now traditional areas of Listening, Composing and Performing. Music is an option at both GCSE and A Level where the Edexcel courses are taught. Many music students have continued their studies in further education.

Music Scholarships
Music Scholarships, Exhibitions and Bursaries are awarded to talented pupils of all ages. A special Organ Scholarship is also available to a musician of exceptional talent and musicianship. Further details are available from the Director of Music or the Headmaster's Secretary

I hardly dare admit it but I've got just as much from my childrens time with Barney School as them!
