Girls - Marwood

After looking at several schools for our son, Barnard Castle was the one school that stood out from the rest. The school has great family values. You are made to feel welcome at the school and as a parent you are kept informed on a regular basis with life at Barney.

Welcome to Marwood House.

Marwood House was formed in 1993 for the exclusive use of day girls when Barnard Castle School became entirely co-educational. It used to lay on the parish boundary of Marwood, hence its name, but moved to refurbished accommodation adjacent to the teaching block and the School field.

The Houses play a key role in achieving the aims of the School. Consequently the aims of Marwood House broadly follow those of the School, they are to:

• Create a supportive and comfortable environment in which pupils are able to mature and form relationships with other pupils whilst fostering independence and an ability to develop interests outside the House.
• Promote achievement and high expectations within a happy, caring, purposeful and structured community.
• Encourage the development of a spiritual and moral dimension in pupil’s lives.
• Promote positively the virtues of self-discipline, diligence, mutual respect, decency, service and good citizenship.
• Support the transition from childhood toward adulthood, encouraging the girls to develop a sense of responsibility and self respect.
• Ensure all School and House rules are observed.
• Ensure the girls display high standards of behaviour.
• Help girls to accept responsibility for their actions and recognise the impact of their behaviour on others.

Houses play an important part in the life of Barnard Castle School. Each pupil is allocated an Academic Tutor. The tutors are attached to each House and oversee the academic progress of each pupil. Pupils see their tutor at least once a day. I, along with the tutor, deal with any pastoral issues that may occur. It is also my role to ensure that the girls are well cared for, happy and busy, and that they make the most of their opportunities at the school.

There are a wide range of House Competitions. In the Autumn Term House Singing is the major event and a lot of time is spent practicing and perfecting the various songs that the sixth form choose. Towards the end of this term there are House Swimming and Hockey Competitions. The Barney Bash and Run are in the Easter Term, followed by Sports Day in the Summer Term.

More informal competitions take place on Wednesday afternoons, these include: scrabble, chess, cake decorating, kite making, public speaking and a whole lot more.

Whilst pupils are encouraged to mix and socialise with members of other Houses, they are very proud to be members of Marwood House. Strong and long lasting friendships are forged in their time in the House.
