Girls - Longfield House

The standard of education is high and Barnard Castle produces a safe and secure environment where all can learn without anxiety.
Mr and Mrs N Hardy

Welcome to Longfield!

Welcome to Longfield House. As Housemistress of Longfield House my role is to ensure that the girls are all happy, well cared for and fully engaged in all aspects of the school and the boarding community both academically and socially. Along with my husband and two young children we aim to promote a family environment in which the girls thrive, have fun and flourish into confident, well rounded individuals. The hope is that once the girls leave Longfield they will have acquired skills and learnt values that go on to help them throughout their lives.

Longfield House was built in 1987 when the demands for girls boarding increased to the point where they could no longer be accommodated off site. In 2002 the numbers increased so Longfield Lodge was created for the younger girls; Miss Jones is the Housemother and oversees the day to day welfare of these girls. In 2003 Longfield was extended to provide 12 more rooms. Long Courts has been the latest addition over the last 3 years. We currently have 55 boarders between the ages of 11 and 18.

The accommodation is of a very high standard. The majority of girls share a double bedroom and the Sixth form have their own private study bedrooms. There are three very comfortable common rooms and a fully fitted kitchen. All girls have access to the internet within the house and also have the use of the fitness suite, squash courts, Music School, the Sports Hall, the Astroturf and the Swimming Pool (supervised).

All girls spend an hour and a quarter on prep, five evenings per week with year 10 and above having a further forty five minutes to take into account the demands of exams. Prep time is well staffed and work during this time is monitored and disciplined. Sunday prep time is 45 minutes long. All girls are encouraged to develop a positive and productive work ethic.

We promote a family atmosphere by assigning each pupil to a family; this consists of at least one pupil from each year group and they remain together for their time at school. Together they take part in many organized in-house events such as team building events, quizzes, movie nights, theme nights etc which mainly take place at weekends. Our team of tutors and matron are always keen to be involved and help to make the House a friendly and caring place to be.

During the week there are 135 activities on offer between 4 and 5 pm. All girls are expected to take part in at least 3 activities and on Wednesday there is a regular House competition with all pupils being encouraged to take part or support their House. Weekend trips are popular and there is a regular trip run each Sunday. Trips have included; York, Wet n’ Wild, the cinema, Go Ape, bowling, ice-skating as well as to the theatre. On Exeat weekends there are organized trips for the boarders on the Saturday.

We would only be delighted to welcome anyone to look round our house and sample the friendly, positive, vibrant and successful family atmosphere that we pride ourselves on.
