Learning Support

Many students require support at some stage in their school career. The Learning Support Department at Barnard Castle School consists of a team of teachers skilled in delivering support to pupils who have the underlying aptitude to follow a broad school curriculum and who in addition have specific learning difficulties or disabilities. We have two specialist maths teachers as well as experts in literacy and learning difficulties and work in both the senior and Prep School.

Support is also offered to students whose first language is not English.

Many students who receive support qualify as being 'dual-exceptional' i.e. those who have a high level of academic ability or a highly developed talent as well as a specific learning difference or disability.

Our ethos is to make learning support as enjoyable and as much a part of everyday school life as possible. Learning support is delivered in a variety of formats to suit the needs of the child, including individual, paired and sometimes group activities. We aim to encourage, support and motivate the learners to enable them to make progress and move forward in their learning. We want them to become successful, confident and happy students.

As with any aspect of school life, communication is vital and we believe that the best results are always achieved when parents and school work closely together.
