Modern Languages
The Modern Languages Department is enjoying one of the most successful periods in its history. As a modern foreign language is still compulsory for most pupils at GCSE Level, the Department has an important role.
The aims of the Department are manifold: to provide a curriculum which is interesting and relevant to the current needs of society; to promote pupils’ interest in and enjoyment of languages; to increase awareness of the wider world in which they are growing up and their role and responsibilities within it. Languages provide our means of communication, and it is this that the Department endeavours to foster.
The department has five classrooms in the Languages teaching block. Certain rooms are equipped with televisions linked to a satellite system, video machines and tape recorders. Two are fitted with inter-active whiteboards. Computers, CD ROMs are being used more and more in the learning of languages.
Results at GCSE, AS and A2 in all three languages are consistently very good. Several pupils continue one or two languages into the Sixth Form, and many of these go on to University to pursue their studies, often combining their interest in languages with another discipline: law, marketing or management, for example.
We thought very carefully about which school we should choose for our two sons and were keen to make sure that their very individual needs were met. I can with all honesty say that we were extremely happy with the all round education offered to each of our sons.
