Day Houses
After looking at several schools for our son, Barnard Castle was the one school that stood out from the rest. The school has great family values. You are made to feel welcome at the school and as a parent you are kept informed on a regular basis with life at Barney.

There are two day girl houses (Bowes and Marwood), and three day boy houses (Tees, Durham and Dale). Each house is run by a Housemaster or a Housemistress supported by a team of tutors. Every pupil sees his or her individual tutor at least twice a day when they meet for morning and afternoon registration.
Tutors and Houseparents play a vital role in pupils’ lives, not least when they receive their regular assessments for their performance in class and homework. Tutors are more than happy to liaise with teachers and parents, and constant sharing of information in this way means that we can offer pupils extra support where necessary.
Pupils are proud of their houses. Each term they compete for the much prized Chairman’s Trophy for the house with most academic merits, and every week there are a variety of inter-house competitions often run by the seniors. As well as matches in all the major sports there are music, art and other competitions – last term even saw the first inter-house cake icing activity!
