Cross Country
We are extremely happy with our daughters' education at BCS where they are truly valued and benefit from a very broad and balanced curriculum.

Cross Country has a special place in the life of Barnard Castle School with the ‘Barnard Run Cup’ being the oldest School competition. It dates back to 1892 when Lord Barnard donated and presented the trophy. The modern Barnard Run involves girls and boys competing at Junior (Years 7 and 8), Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) and Senior (Years 11 and Sixth Form). The race takes place annually at the end of the first half of Spring Term, a great occasion and a great way to start the holiday!
As part of the build up to the ‘Barney Run’ we hold the ‘Barney Bash’. This event gives every pupil in the School an opportunity to represent their House, with the added incentive of raising money for charity. In recent years the pupils have raised over £6,000 per year, for Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland, Help for Heroes and Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The School is a member of the South-West Durham Area Athletics Association and many of our pupils have represented both the Area and County through competitions organised by the association.
Spring term sees regular running fixtures take place with regional HMC schools.
Over the years we have been fortunate to have many talented runners. The most successful runner the School has had is probably Geoff Turnbull who went on to represent his country. He is a winner and record holder of the Senior Barney course in an amazing time of 20 minutes and 45 seconds back in 1979. One day I am sure this will be beaten by our new generation of athletes!
