We thought very carefully about which school we should choose for our two sons and were keen to make sure that their very individual needs were met. I can with all honesty say that we were extremely happy with the all round education offered to each of ou

At Barnard castle School we firmly believe in the benefits of a fully rounded education. Our most recent Ofsted report described the extra-curricular provision of the school as ‘outstanding'. With almost one hundred activities and excursions available every year, the School hopes there is something for everyone to enjoy outside of the classroom.

We know that our pupils will enter a world where communication, teamwork and leadership skills are highly valued by employers. It is our hope that all our pupils will develop these skills through their participation in a rich and varied activity programme including Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Combined Cadet Force and a myriad of schools sports teams.

At the same time we are keen for them to develop new interests as a good thing in its own right, whether it be fencing, horseriding, trampolining, rock climbing street dance or any one of the wealth of activities on offer at the school. As part of the House system there are a number of inter house competitions which take place every week throughout the year. As well as the traditional inter house events such as Rugby, Hockey, Cross Country, Cricket, Football, Netball, Tennis and Sports Day there is also House Song, House Music, House Quiz, House Debating as well as competitions in Creative Writing and Drama.

Every holiday sees popular school excursions, be they junior and senior skiing trips, watersports in France, rugby and hockey tours (South Africa 2010), music tours (Belgium 2009), CCF summer camps, walking expeditions, classics trips to Italy and a host more.

In short, we celebrate achievement whether it be a girl playing chess for her House or a boy playing rugby for his country. We encourage our pupils to let us know of any new activities they would like us to put on, and wherever possible we do.
