There is never a dull moment in the Reception class at Prep School. A bright, warm and friendly environment entices children into a wealth of activities and learning opportunities to give them the best possible start to their school career. Whether they enjoy role-play, construction, painting, writing or counting in one of our exciting learning areas, every child benefits from the positive atmosphere and is able to develop their knowledge in a meaningful and purposeful way. Focused learning in a small, caring class means each child is supported individually and allowed to progress at their own pace. We exempt from the teaching and learning requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum which enables us to work effectively with each individual child without constraints.

Most lessons are with the Reception class teacher supported by a teaching assistant. Music, PE and French are taught by specialist teachers. Learning is enhanced through play both indoors and in the dedicated Reception Outdoor Classroom, providing plenty of opportunities for exploration and investigation in all weathers. During the Trinity Term the children have swimming lessons at Teesdale Leisure Centre with a qualified instructor.

There are six equally important areas of learning and development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Expressive Arts and Design
  • Physical Development

"In the EYFS, all children make excellent progress in all areas of learning and achieve beyond the levels expected for their age." Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2016
