Netball Success
Young netball players have battled their way on to the national stage with a gutsy performance in the regional heats. For the first time ever Barnard Castle School’s U14 squad has qualified for the National Schools Finals, which will be staged in Brighton in March.
Barney girls won through by the narrowest margin in a regional contest in Newcastle against Durham High School, Central Newcastle High, Carmel and Prudhoe schools, Bede Academy, Northumberland, Newcastle Church High School and Harton School, South Shields.
The girls thought they had missed out on goal difference but when the results were announced had actually won through to the finals on points.
Barnard Castle School coach Jacquie Robson said: “There were tears of frustration when we thought we had gone out on goal difference but this turned to joy when they announced that we were through. It was a really gutsy performance particularly as some of the girls were carrying injuries and we are absolutely delighted that this is the first netball team at Barnard Castle School to ever reach the national finals.”
Team captain Thea Thompson had two reasons to celebrate; The Hartlepool Oaksway player has also been selected for the regional U18 talent squad.
