Headmaster's Message

Set in its own extensive grounds in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Barnard Castle School is a vibrant, happy and purposeful community in which every child is known and valued. Amidst the splendour of the landscape and the grandeur of its imposing buildings, boys and girls learn to live and work together in an unpretentious, open and respectful manner, as befits the School’s Christian foundation and values.
Every child will find his or her niche here and will also have the opportunity to embrace new challenges in an atmosphere of supportive encouragement. Here children have space to enjoy their childhood without the pressure to grow up too quickly. They also learn a sense of duty, selflessness and the importance of community. As they progress though the school, they will be encouraged to develop and exercise leadership in a caring, collaborative and dynamic relationship with their peers and houseparents.
We believe in a broad and balanced curriculum for all, revelling in academic rigour and promoting the rewards of endeavour, the wonder of discovery and the richness that comes from an aptitude for life-long learning. Equally essential to the success of our boys and girls is the development of confidence, integrity, resilience and team-work which are learned in a range of sports and a wealth of cultural and co-curricular activities.
Whether you are considering enrolling your son or daughter in Prep, the Senior School or Sixth Form, I would be delighted to meet your family and to give you the opportunity to see our School in action. I am confident that you will enjoy the experience.
